#988Day #988Missouri #SuicidePreventionMonth

The Saturday before Thanksgiving is reserved for those who have lost a loved one (friends and/or family) to suicide, and to be able to acknowledge those loved ones, by name, as the holiday season approaches.

Since November 2018, Cos4Hope has joined forces with fellow fandoms to pay tribute to those who lost their life to suicide. A fellowship known as Lightsabers, Lanterns, & Lumos illuminates International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day.

A call to arms beckons all attendees to bring forth their magical instruments of light, from the gleaming swords of the Jedi to the illuminated orbs of the Pokémon masters, swords of light, lanterns, glowing wands, sonic screwdrivers, and tesseracts illuminate the night sky, all casting spells of remembrance.

Words of Hope from fandom echo through the gathering, lifting our spirits and soothing our souls. Names of those lost to suicide are read aloud, followed by a prop lighting.

As each lighted prop glimmers, we are reminded of those who have left us and the memories they left behind. As the lights dim, we bid farewell to those who have departed, yet their light lingers on, shining bright in the hearts of those who remain.

We encourage participants to submit photos in cosplay, if they choose, and submit a second photo (or short video) of them with a light-up prop in honor of their loved one's memory.

This is a FREE event.

Lightsabers, lanterns, lighted wands, sonic screwdrivers, rings, gaming controllers, or other light-up props to use for our vigil.

PLEASE NO OPEN FLAMES

Please register by clicking the "Find Tickets" button, be sure to add the name(s) of your loved one(s) to be read, and we hope you look to join us for this time together of remembrance.

Helping Our Students

UCM Faculty and Staff, have you ever been concerned for a student's mental well being? Have you ever noticed a change in a student's behavior? Have you thought about warning signs or risk factors for depression or suicidality?

Have you wondered what your responsibilities as a UCM faculty/staff member are when you encounter a student who exhibits some of these warning signs? Are there protective factors?

We will host panel discussions to help faculty and staff learn how to best respond to students in crisis on September 6 from 3:30-4:30 and September 12 from 9:30-10:30. Both panel discussions are in Union 235 and both panel sessions will cover the same topics.

Panelists will include Dr .Ashley Gage, Professor Juanice Williams, Dr. Corey Bowman, and Dr. Jeanne Woon.

There will be the option of attending the panels virtually via YouTube: https://youtube.com/live/2zfX_Cs9oYM?feature=share
